Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month 2024 with the Charleston County Public Library September 15 to October 15!  Throughout the month-long celebration we will recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans.

Visit select branches to check out book displays, attend library programs and participate in activities. You can also stream music for free, learn a new languageaccess ebooks and audiobooks or visit our branches to explore books and more relating to Hispanic heritage. Charlie Cart: Venezuelan Chicha | Wednesday, September 11 

Come see how Venezuelan Chicha is made at the Keith Summey North Charleston Library from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.. You will get to try the sweet beverage while learning a little about the country. Allergen Alert: dairy, rice, cinnamon. Ages 6-11. 

Spanish Bingo | Monday, September 16 

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage month as we play Loteria (Bingo!) and brush up on your Spanish skills. For teens in grades 6-12. This program is taking place at the Keith Summey North Charleston Library from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. 

Movie Afternoon: Coco | Wednesday, September 18 

Join us for a special movie afternoon at the Keith Summey North Charleston Library from 3:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.. We'll be screening Coco An aspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer! Coco is rated PG. All ages.  

Mexican Yarn Painting| Monday, September 30 

Learn a traditional Mexican craft by creating “paintings” with yarn at the Wando Mt. Pleasant Library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. After a brief overview of the craft, participants will work on their own creations. All materials are supplies. This program is for adults only, in Creative Studio 1. Registration required. Movie Mondays: Vivo | Monday, October 3 

Enjoy Vivo, a family-friendly adventure comedy featuring a Cuban, music-loving kinkajou at the Otranto Road Library from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

Dance Performance | Saturday, October 12

Join us for a performance by a Latin performing group suitable for all ages at the Mt. Pleasant Library from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.. Don’t miss the Latina Women’s Group as they showcase traditional Latin rhythms through a captivating dance performance.

Latin Dance Classes | Various Dates and Branches

Join Cristy Flores of Danza Viva Mexico for an exciting Latin dance class! Open to all ages.

History  

According to The Library of Congress, the observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. In, 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to 30 days. The day of Sept. 15 is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept.18, respectively. In addition, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is Oct. 12, falls within this 30-day period.
