Defining Hurricanes & Tropical Storms
The following is a list of terms relevant to hurricanes and tropical storms. If a storm threatens the Charleston County area and you are either required or feel the need to evacuate, please see Charleston County's Evacuation Information
Tropical Storm
Once winds within tropical system reach 39 mph and the distinct low pressure area is well defined by a rotating circulation, the system is considered a tropical storm and is given a name.
Hurricane
A Tropical Storm that has sustained winds exceeding 74 mph or greater, dangerously high water and rough seas.
Hurricane Watch

Hurricane Warning
