August 31, 2022

The Charleston County Public Library is joining with libraries nationwide and the American Library Association to celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month in September!  A library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning. A library card opens a world of infinite possibilities through resources and services!

Did you Know?

Your CCPL Card gives you access to collection items, resources and more beyond books? With a library card, you can check out ebooksaudiobooks, Chromebooks, WiFi hotspots, movies, get passes to local attractions or parks, research your family’s history, learn a new language and more.

You can also learn how to sew, get help writing a resume or finding a job, grow your computer skills and so much more, all for FREE!

The library’s access to digital tools is also an invaluable resource. CCPL provides access to more than 50 databases and subscription services. Patrons with a CCPL card number can access resources for free like Consumer Reports, the Mango language learning program, the electronic version of the New York Times, and Learning Express, which provides practice testing for the G.E.D., nursing exams, license exams, and much more.

Get a Card

Library cards are free to Charleston County residents, business owners, property owners, students, members of the military, teachers of accredited K-12 grade schools and employees of Charleston County. All others need to qualify and apply for an Out-of-County library card in person at one of our branches and pay the annual fee of $40.

Learn more and apply for a library card here. You can also call 843-805-6930 or stop by a library branch near you to sign-up.

CCSD Student Library Card Access

Through a partnership with Charleston County School District, ALL CCSD students already have access to library services. With the L2 (L Squared) Program, students are automatically registered for a free account. Visit ccpl.org/l2 or contact your local library for details.

Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

More about Library Card Sign-Up Month 2022

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card. This year, Tony Award-winning performer, actress, singer-songwriter, and philanthropist Idina Menzel (Frozen, Wicked) and her sister, author and educator Cara Mentzel, will serve as honorary chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month. Idina and Cara are excited to remind everyone that one of the best places to find your voice is at the library. During Library Card Sign-Up Month, they want us to explore all the library has to offer, like new children’s books, access to technology, and educational programming.
