CHARLESTON, S.C. - March is Women's History Month, a celebration of women's contributions to history, culture and society. It's been observed annually in March since 1987 in the United States.
Did you know Women's History Month began as a weeklong celebration? The first National Women's History Week was established in 1980 with a proclamation from President Jimmy Carter. Seven years later Congress designated March as Women's History Month.
The 2022 Women’s History Month theme is, “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope." According to the National Women's History Alliance, it's both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.
