CHARLESTON, S.C. – Construction of the new Keith Summey North Charleston Library is underway. Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) and Charleston County Government officials kicked off the construction of the new facility during a groundbreaking ceremony on May 17. The 20,000-square foot facility will be located at the site of the recently closed Cooper River Memorial Library at 3503 Rivers Ave. The new branch will reuse a renovated portion of the former library.

The library will include:

  • 100-seat community room
  • Outdoor reading areas
  • Self-check out
  • Community classroom
  • Study room
  • Separate children and teen areas

“We’re excited to begin construction on this beautiful new library,” said CCPL Executive Director Angela Craig. “Facilities like this one help us engage our patrons and members of the community, giving them access to vital resources and supporting CCPL’s mission of lifelong learning.”

In November 2014, Charleston County residents approved a referendum to build five new libraries and renovate 13 others. The first phase of the overall project involved soliciting community input for the five new library locations. One of CCPL’s top priorities during this process involved obtaining practical information from public library users. Architects presented their designs for the new branch to the community during a virtual public forum held on March 17, 2021.
