CHARLESTON, S.C. – As we move forward in 2021, we are hoping for some sense of “normal” to return to our lives, but some changes from the pandemic will remain in today’s work environment.  Here are four things that will remain with us in our new normal.

Internal Talent

The best job opportunity may be within your own organization. Organizations are first looking internally to find the right person to fill positions. According to a recent Deloitte report entitled, Activating the internal talent marketplace, this methodology helps organizations apply the talent they already have more effectively. Eventually, such marketplaces are expected to evolve into a place where employees can stretch roles, assignments, be mentored, and create other opportunities to develop their skills. This new normal in internal focus means that employees will need to become more adept at navigating their current workplaces, ensuring that their own skills set, training, and goals are up-to-date, to find their next role within their organization.

Your Online Presence

As candidates for employment are being sought by employers, recruiters and hiring managers via digital or online connections, you need to know that your digital footprint matters.  It is important to clean up your social accounts, make sure you are providing and creating relevant content that will catch the eye of potential employers.  Job search websites, like  Monster.com, all offer you examples of how you can improve your digital presence.

Networking online is one of the new ways of job searching in 2021.  LinkedIn is the go-to website for networking, but you can create professional content on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, as well, to engage with potential employers and other professionals in your career field.

Employers and Capable Employees

In a Fast Company article written by Gwen Moran, 6 Skills Employees Will Need in the Post-Pandemic Workplace, Moran refers to Gartner data which found one-third of the skills listed in an average 2017 job posting, would not be relevant by 2021. Roles are being redefined and employers are looking for candidates with problem-solving abilities, along with other talents like self-direction, comfort with technology, and strong communication skills across various platforms.  Make sure your resume and digital presence demonstrate your areas of expertise.

Where Jobs Are Located Will Not Matter as Much

With the existence of so many opportunities for working remotely, where you live may become less of a factor in your job search. Therefore, look for those jobs that offer you that flexibility. Check out this article on remote work statistics.

Finding employment in 2021, like so many other areas of work-life, may cause you to explore new avenues of self-discovery that will help your success in finding the right workplace for you.
