The exhibit, Heroism and Heartbreak during COVID-19 will be traveling to various branches in 2022. While witnessing the daily devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic and working with the sickest patients, Alan Hawes was compelled to marry his two passions: caregiving and camera work. Hawes was previously a newspaper photographer for more than twenty years before he followed his calling to become an ICU nurse at MUSC. With hospital and patient consent, Hawes started a photo series to capture the heroism and heartbreak happening behind hospital walls. The photos in his exhibit are a rare glimpse into the lives of patients, families and medical staff as they grapple with the ongoing physical and mental toll of the pandemic.
