Scope and Content

This collection contains Spoleto Festival USA and Piccolo Spoleto materials. These materials mainly consist of programs, brochures, newspaper clippings, and ticket stubs.

Administrative/Biographical History

The Collection was created by Robert M. Burkhart of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He donated the materials “in memory of Josephine Regan Flanegan” to Coastal Carolina University in the early 2000’s. There were two sets of ticket stubs to each performance from 1980 until 1992. Thereafter only one ticket stub per performance is in the collection. There was an obituary for a Josephine Flanagan of Myrtle Beach in The State newspaper on July 5th, 1994. Robert M. Burkhart died May 18, 2003. His obituary was published in “Sun News, Myrtle Beach” on May 27, 2003.

The Spoleto Festival USA began in 1977 by Gian Carlo Menotti and others as a counterpart to the annual festival in Spoleto, Italy. The Festival occurs each spring when theatre, opera, dance, art exhibits, and other performing arts are showcased across the city of Charleston.

Custodial History

Collection originally gifted to Coastal Carolina University (South Carolina) by creator. Coastal Carolina transferred the materials to Charleston County Public Library in 2013 since the materials reflect Charleston area events.
