CHARLESTON, S.C. - It's no secret the Wando Mount Pleasant Library east of the Cooper River is a beautiful building. Just ask any of the thousands of patrons that move in and out of its doors regularly. But now the South Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architects agree the 40,000-square-foot building is award-winningly beautiful.
In an virtual awards ceremony Thursday afternoon, the AIASC awarded Wando Mount Pleasant a Merit Award for New Construction. Designed by LS3P, Wando Mount Pleasant serves the quickly growing areas of Mount Pleasant around Wando High School and Carolina Park.
Natural light fills the building that includes areas designed for children, teens, and adults, boasts a 250-person auditorium with a state-of-the-art audio visual system, meeting and study rooms, a digital recording studio and editing suites, a makerspace, and two outdoor spaces. The children's areas includes a reading oculus, story time room, and pop-out window seats.
The inside of the library blends with the outdoors through the design choices to use natural materials and colors, including wood, bark, and water. Even the flooring in the children's area looks like a field of grass.
